The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan has signed a memorandum of cooperation with ORMEX and Chapter Zero Kazakhstan to adapt international standards for calculating carbon credits in the agricultural sector of the country.
ORMEX applies an innovative ecosystem regenerative farming (ERA) methodology and uses blockchain to account for carbon credits. This project will be one of the first in the field of carbon removal implemented within the framework of the updated Nationally Defined Contribution of Kazakhstan (NDC 3.0). It is expected to make a significant contribution to achieving the national target of reducing emissions by 15% by 2030 from 1990 levels. The project will capture and store carbon in soils, which will help Kazakhstan get closer to its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 25 million tons under current commitments.
"This Memorandum highlights the importance of cross-sectoral cooperation in addressing climate change issues. By integrating sustainability into agriculture, we can create a model for other industries and regions, guaranteeing a sustainable future for Kazakhstan," said Sabit Mukhanov, CEO of Chapter Zero Kazakhstan
By integrating ORMEX methodologies and Chapter Zero Kazakhstan's expertise in climate management, the initiative aims to position Kazakhstan as a regional leader in regenerative agriculture and carbon management.
