On November 15, 2024, the Ministry of Justice, together with the Ministry of Culture and Information, held a meeting to prepare for the protection of the fourth periodic National report of the Republic of Kazakhstan within the framework of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on human Rights. The event was held at the National Academic Library.
The Universal Periodic Review is a unique UN mechanism that covers all 193 Member States and provides an opportunity for States to report every four years on measures taken in the field of human rights protection. The UPR allows countries to share successful experiences and identify areas for improvement.
At the meeting, representatives of government agencies and civil society discussed Alternative reports prepared by a Coalition of non-governmental organizations in Kazakhstan. The reports provide assessments of the current situation and recommendations for improvement in key areas such as freedom of expression, access to information, freedom of assembly, religion, electoral participation and government.
It should be noted that according to the results of the previous UPR in 2019, Kazakhstan received 245 recommendations from the member countries of the UN Human Rights Council. Of these, 57 recommendations in this area have been supported and are being successfully implemented.
The participants of the meeting expressed their readiness for further cooperation, emphasizing the importance of discussing Alternative reports.
