At a side event of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Republic of Kazakhstan presented the results of climate reporting carried out within the framework of international obligations. The event was organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, JSC "Zhasyl Damu" and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The event was attended by representatives of international organizations from the countries of the Eastern Europe and CIS region.
The key data of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the first Biennial Transparency Report, on the progress of the implementation of the ONUV, the National Report of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the inventory of anthropogenic emissions and removals by sinks for 1990-2022, scenarios for modeling the country's electric power sector, various emission scenarios, recommendations on economic transformation of sectors and investment strategies were presented.
According to the requirements of the UNFCCC, each participating country submits climate reports at the conferences of the parties every two years, in which it fixes indicators and records annual greenhouse gas emissions. The biennial reports reflect the progress of countries in achieving their climate goals.
Starting in 2024, a new component has been added to the biennial reports — tracking the progress of the implementation of nationally determined contributions (ONUV). This component allows participating countries not only to increase transparency of reporting and to clearly monitor the implementation of the ONU, but also to increase ambitions to reflect the progress of the ONU in subsequent biennial reports.
Kazakhstan, among only 9 countries out of 197 members of the UNFCCC, presented the Biennial Transparency report (BTR1) at the COP29.
