The Almaty City Development Center, with the assistance of KAZGAS and the Almatygenplan Research Institute, announces the start of the DESIGN REVIEW 2024 competition for aspiring architects and designers, which will last from October 30 to November 30, 2024.
Participation in the competition is a unique opportunity to create an inclusive environment in Soviet–era and post-Soviet homes that do not have elevators going to the upper floors, which is a difficulty for many residents, including people with special needs. The aim of the competition is the reconstruction of such houses to improve the quality of life and create a more comfortable and modern urban space that takes into account the needs of all residents, including people with limited mobility.
To participate in the competition, you must register before November 6 this year inclusive.
In the period from November 7 to 15, for registered participants of DESIGN REVIEW 2024, specialists of the Research Institute "Almatygenplan" and KAZGAS, as well as attracted experts in the field of architecture, will conduct master classes on research methods and spatial analysis (participants will study methods of urban space research and identification of problems, which will allow forming accurate and effective design solutions); formation of design solutions (development of participants' skills in creating design projects and testing them in real conditions); methods of architectural presentation (participants will learn how to create presentations of their projects, including storytelling and creative concept presentation methods).
The contest entries must be submitted by November 28 inclusive. Among the mandatory requirements are the justification and analysis of the selected object, the availability of a spatial planning solution, drawings and visualizations, etc. The full list of conditions is in the Competition Regulations on the website of the Almaty City Development Center.
In the period from November 29 to November 30, participants will present their competitive works to a commission consisting of specialists from the Research Institute "Almatygenplan", KAZGAS and attracted architects, urbanists. According to the results of the performances, three winners will be determined who will receive cash prizes: 1st place – 300 thousand tenge, 2nd place – 200 thousand tenge, 3rd place – 100 thousand tenge.
"The main idea of the competition is to ensure the principle of equal, unhindered access for people with special needs through the development of interesting initiatives and solutions. The best competitive works of the participants will be offered to social services and the business community in the future so that they do not remain a private practice, but are taken into account in the regulations that regulate the system of social assistance and support for citizens with special needs," said Zhanar Gabdullina, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Almaty City Development Center JSC.
