On November 18, 2024, a high-level side event was held on the fields of SOR29 on the topic "The fall of the Caspian Sea level in the context of climate change."
The event was attended by ministers and Vice-Ministers of the Environment and Ecology, as well as foreign affairs of the Caspian littoral States, representatives of UNEP, UN-Habitat and the World Bank.
The purpose of the event was to discuss the lowering of the Caspian Sea level, which has a significant impact on the environmental situation in the region, as well as on the economy and welfare of coastal states.
The participants stressed the need to strengthen regional cooperation to address the problem of transboundary climate risks and ensure a joint response of the Caspian littoral countries to sea level decline, as well as the importance of collective efforts to develop and implement joint measures to adapt to climate change and minimize its impact on the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea.
During the discussion, Vice Minister M. Oshurbayev emphasized the importance of preserving the Caspian Sea and studying the drop in water levels in order to develop effective measures to prevent further drop in water levels.
In order to study this issue, the Kazakh side proposed to strengthen cooperation between the Caspian littoral countries in the field of systematic monitoring and research of sea level, conduct joint scientific research to predict changes and develop effective adaptation measures, as well as develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce the negative impact of climate change on the marine environment and coastal zones of the Caspian Sea.
The participants of the event also supported the initiative of the Azerbaijani side to create an expert group to identify the causes of the decline in the Caspian Sea level.
As a result of the side event, a Declaration was adopted on strengthening cooperation in the fight against the decline of the Caspian Sea level.
