Formation of sustainable plastic solutions before INC-5

On the eve of the key INC-5 negotiations (Busan, Korea) on the development of an international legal treaty on plastics, a side event "Plastic Product Design: Challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the context of climate change" was held in the QAZAQSTAN pavilion at COP29. The event was organized by the Project Office for Central Asia on Climate Change and Green Energy.
Among the honorary speakers were Mansur Oshurbayev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan; Yutaka Matsuzawa, Deputy Minister for Global Environmental Affairs of the Ministry of Environment of Japan; and Anthony Agota, EU Special Envoy for Climate and Environment. A special video message was sent by Joti Mathur-Philippe, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Combating Plastic Pollution, emphasizing the importance of sustainable plastic design in global negotiations. Shoji Kusumoto from Panasonic (Japan) and Natalia Skripnikova from GRID-Arendal (Norway) also presented their ideas and solutions to improve the design of plastic products.
The session became an important platform for discussing innovative approaches, international cooperation and the promotion of the circular economy, providing valuable recommendations for global plastic management efforts in the run-up to INC-5.
