Kazakhstan Will Assume the Chairmanship of the Economic Cooperation Organization

Mashhad, December 3, 2024 – Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu participated to the 28th meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
During the meeting, the heads of delegations discussed key areas of interaction within the ECO framework and considered proposals for strengthening regional economic cooperation.
In his speech, Minister Nurtleu noted that the Republic of Kazakhstan will assume the chairmanship of the Organization in 2025, which will be held under the motto “Promoting Regional Transport Connectivity and Sustainable Development.”
The Kazakh side emphasized the need to strengthen trade and economic ties between the ECO member countries. In this regard, special attention was paid to the development of transit transport routes, the launch of high-speed freight trains, the creation of a digital transit system, and the increase of the volume of intra-regional trade.
It was also proposed to establish ECO cooperation with the Islamic Organization for Food Security to address common challenges in the field of food security.
The importance of combating climate change and the development of a “green” economy was also emphasized by Kazakhstan. In this regard, the ECO member states were invited to actively participate in the Regional Climate Summit, which will be held in 2026 under the auspices of the UN.
For reference: The Economic Cooperation Organization was established in 1985. The main objective of the ECO is to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states. It is composed of 10 countries: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkiye and Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan has been a member of the ECO since 1992.
