Today, the Abai region is actively developing transport infrastructure, including air, road and rail transportation, which contributes to improving communication between the regions, developing tourism and increasing economic activity. There are two airports in the region, in Semey and Urjara, which play a key role in ensuring transport accessibility.
The Semey Airport, built in 1983, meets international standards after reconstruction in 2016-2018 and is capable of receiving modern aircraft. Today, it serves the flights of the airlines "Fly Arystan" and "Southern Sky" in the directions of Astana, Almaty and Urjar.
Starting in March 2025, ahead of the tourist season, it is planned to increase the frequency of flights and update the flight schedule, which will create more opportunities for passengers. It is also planned to reconstruct the airport terminal, and a PSA has been developed. This will significantly increase the capacity and improve passenger comfort. At the moment, specialized equipment, an outpatient elevator for people with limited mobility and a low-floor bus have already been purchased for the airport.
"The development of the transport infrastructure of the Abai region is aimed at attracting investments, creating new jobs and developing tourism. The increase in the number of flights, the reconstruction of airports and the improvement of the quality of service make the region more attractive to residents and visitors. Initiatives such as expanding tourist routes, subsidizing flights and modernizing infrastructure facilities ensure the stable development of the region and its integration into the national transport network," said Dmitry Garikov, Deputy Akim of the Abai region.
Urjar Village Airport, which has been operating since 1978, is also an important transportation hub for the region. After two major runway reconstruction projects, lighting and alarm equipment and video surveillance systems, the airport is able to accommodate modern aircraft with a capacity of up to 100 passengers. Since 2024, design and estimate documentation has been developed for the reconstruction of the passenger terminal. The project will improve passenger service, which is already reaching 80-100 people per hour with an estimated capacity of 35 people.
During the summer tourist season, from June 1 to August 31, 2025, Scat Airline plans to operate flights on Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft in the directions Astana – Urjar – Astana and Almaty – Urjar – Almaty.
In addition, Southern Sky Airlines regularly operates flights to Semey – Urjar – Semey destinations.
