Glaciers affect the state of rivers in the vicinity of Almaty, which is why they are of great ecological importance. In addition, the glaciers of the Ili Alatau are a very popular tourist destination among climbers and travelers.
2. CONSTITUTION GLACIER
The Constitution Glacier is located in the south-east of Kazakhstan, in the Zhetysu Alatau (or eastern part of the Tien Shan). Its height is more than 4,500 meters.

The Glacier of the Mining Institute is located on the northern slope of the Ili Alatau, east of Almaty. The glacier was studied by employees of the Mining Institute in Almaty, so it was named after the educational institution. It is considered the largest glacier in the Turgen River basin. Its area is about 3,786 square kilometers.
The Glacier of the Mining Institute is an important natural area for climatic and geographical research. Its size and condition affect the ecosystem of the region, as well as the formation of rivers.
4. SHOKALSKY GLACIER
The Shokalsky Glacier is the longest glacier located in the Talgar River basin. The total length is 3.52 kilometers. The glacier is named after the famous geographer and mountaineer Petr Shokalsky, who studied the mountainous and glacial regions of Central Asia.
The Shokalsky glacier is a source of water resources for the rivers flowing through the Ili Alatau. It is also very important for climate research. Because the melting and changing of the glacier determines the climatic indicators of the region.
5. BIG BEREL GLACIER
The Big Berel glacier is located in the Katonkaragay district of the East Kazakhstan region. It is one of the largest glaciers in the region, with an area of 4.7 square kilometers.
