This decision was made by the heads of state of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
Iran's application for the status of an observer state was submitted in May last year.< br>In accordance with the Regulation on the status of an observer state in the Eurasian Economic Union, the commission conducted an analysis of the economic feasibility of interaction between the EAEU and Iran, as well as held consultations with the participation of representatives of the Union. member states and interested parties.
It should be noted that the EAEU occupies an important place in Iran's foreign trade. In 2023, the EAEU's share in Iran's exports amounted to 10.1%, making it the third most important trading partner after China (30.4%) and Turkey (14.5%).
We note that in accordance with the Treaty on the EAEU, an observer state has the right to participate in meetings of the Union's bodies upon invitation and to familiarize itself with documents (except for confidential documents) developed within the framework of the EAEU. .
Granting Iran the status of an observer state is an important step towards strengthening cooperation and developing economic ties between the EAEU member states and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Recall that in 2018, an interim agreement was signed between the EAEU. and Iran, which led to the creation of a free trade zone.
On December 25, 2023, the EAEU countries and Iran signed a full-fledged free trade agreement, which provides for a duty-free trade regime for 90% of the range of goods, which covers more than 95% of mutual trade. parties.
