Today, the Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, M. Oshurbbayev, held a meeting with the Asian Development Bank Advisory Mission.
The meeting was attended by the Director of the Central, Western and Southern Africa Group, Agriculture, Food, Nature and Rural Development Sector Office (AFNR-SG) Y. Siddiqui, Director of the ADB Permanent Mission to Kazakhstan U. Kumar, Director of the Climate Change and Natural Capital Office (AFNR-SG) S. Ranavana, and others.
During the meeting, issues related to identifying promising areas of ADB cooperation and support based on the Government's planned projects, initiatives and priorities in the development of the sector, including nationally determined contributions and the national strategy and action plan for climate change adaptation, were discussed.
The Vice Minister focused in more detail on the creation of a regional knowledge exchange and coordination hub, which is of particular importance for Kazakhstan. This hub can be an important tool for concentrating the efforts of the countries of the region, exchanging best practices and developing long-term strategies for sustainable development.
One of the topics of discussion was the implementation of the “Glaciers to Farms” (G2F) program, and the importance of involving Kazakhstani scientific and research organizations was noted. As M. Oshurbbayev noted, Kazakhstan has accumulated significant experience in the field of glacier research, climate risk assessment and the development of water resources management technologies. The participation of local organizations will allow to supplement the scientific base of the program with a deep understanding of regional specifics and ensure its successful adaptation to local conditions.
As the Vice Minister noted, in order to strengthen regional cooperation, Kazakhstan initiated the holding of a regional Climate Summit in 2026.
This summit will become a platform for Central Asian countries and international partners to discuss key climate challenges, coordinate efforts, and develop common approaches to sustainable development issues.
The Vice Minister expressed gratitude to ADB for its readiness to support the holding of the summit by organizing joint events using the platform of the Central Asian Regional Economic Program (CAREP).
At the end of the conversation, the parties expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation.
