Almaty Mayor Erbolat Dossayev met with Mr. Wang Kun, President of the China Earthquake Administration, during his official visit to China.
It should be noted that the China Earthquake Administration (CEA) is a state body responsible for monitoring, forecasting, assessing and responding to seismic activity in the country.
Erbolat Dossayev got acquainted with the agency's work to reduce the risk of natural disasters and reported on the measures being taken to reduce seismic risk in Almaty.
"More than 40% of Kazakhstan's territory is located in an earthquake-prone area. We are part of the system of seismic belts in Eurasia. Almaty itself is located in a seismically active zone. Therefore, ensuring seismic safety is one of the main priorities in the program "Development of the city of Almaty until 2025 and medium-term prospects until 2030", - said Yerbolat Dossaev.
According to him, 28 stations are operating in Almaty for the prediction and early warning of strong earthquakes, and an additional 70 stations are planned to be installed. 30 stations have been installed this year, and another 40 stations will be put into operation by the end of 2026.
Following the results of the meeting, an agreement was signed between the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observation and Research of Kazakhstan and the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Agency on joint work on integrating seismic monitoring and early warning systems. This document will allow specialists from both countries to exchange seismic information in real time.
"Pre-notifying the population about natural disasters and ensuring their preparedness for earthquakes is one of the pressing issues. In this regard, cooperation with CEA and the China Institute of Geophysics is very important for us,” Yerbolat Dossayev noted.
In turn, Mr. Wang Kun, President of the Earthquake Agency of the People’s Republic of China, expressed confidence that the signed agreement will be an important step in strengthening cooperation in the field of seismic safety between Kazakhstan and China. He also noted that Almaty has great potential for monitoring and responding to natural disasters, and said that CEA will provide comprehensive support in the exchange of experience in seismic monitoring and early response.
