At the Astana airport, fans solemnly welcomed our short track athletes, who brought glory to the country at the Winter Asian Games. At the IX Winter Asian Games in Harbin, the Kazakh national team achieved a historic achievement by winning 1 gold and 2 silver medals, the official website of the capital's akimat reports.
Along with their relatives and fans, the athletes were welcomed with a standing ovation by Vasily Levit, head of the Astana Department of Physical Culture and Sports.
The main sports event of 2025 - the Winter Asian Games in Harbin, which took place on February 7-14, was a moment that will be written in golden letters for Kazakh short track athletes. The men's team won the gold of the Asian Games, which had not been won in almost 30 years. In the 5000-meter relay, the Kazakh national team won a historic victory, beating the Olympic champions and world giants China and South Korea. Athletes from Astana - Adil Galiyakhmetov, Aibek Nasen and Abzal Azhgaliyev - contributed to this victory.
Gold medalist Adil Galiyakhmetov noted that this victory is the result of many years of hard work:
"Our main goal for 2025 was the Winter Asian Games and the World Championships. We started our preparations in May. The method we used on the championship path is the result of a tactical plan developed over several months. We were confident that even if the athletes from China and South Korea did not fall, we would still be able to overtake them. Our tactics were worked out for months," said Adil Galiyakhmetov.
In addition to the men's team, the women's team also brought pride to the country at the Asian Games. The Kazakh national team won a silver medal in the 3000-meter relay. Astana athletes Malika Yermek and Madina Zhanbosynova performed and stood on the podium.
In addition, Astana athletes also won a silver medal in the 2000-meter mixed team relay. The country's honor was defended by Adil Galiyakhmetov, Abzal Azhgaliev and Malika Yermek in this competition.
The victorious path of Kazakhstani short track athletes was not limited to the Asian Games. Adil Galiyakhmetov, an athlete from Astana, won a bronze medal in the team relay at the World Tour stage held yesterday in Milan, Italy.
These victories are evidence of the rise of Kazakhstani short track to a new level. Abzal Azhgaliev's 4th place at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Denis Nikisha's historic silver medal in the 500 meters in 2024, and the best results of the men's and women's teams at this year's Asian Games - all this shows that short track is developing in our country and that high results can be expected from each athlete.
