Strengthening cybersecurity and digitalization of the energy complex of the Republic of Kazakhstan discussed in Astana

On December 3-4, 2024, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with JSC Situational Analytical Center of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Republic of Kazakhstan, UNDESA and ESCAPE held a WorkShop "Future Energy Dialogue 2024". The event was organized as part of a joint project on digitalization of the energy industry using regulatory sandbox approaches. More than 100 participants, including representatives of government agencies, business, academia and international experts, focused on developing solutions to enhance cybersecurity of Kazakhstan's critical infrastructure (KVOIKI), which became a key topic of the Workshop.
The main directions:
- Cybersecurity: developing strategies to protect logistics, prevent cyber attacks and ensure the sustainability of the industry.
- Digital transformation: the use of AI technologies to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the fuel and energy sector.
- Legislation: updating regulatory standards in the field of cybersecurity.
- EnergyTech platform: implementation of monitoring, data protection and energy management tools.
Results:
- Recommendations have been prepared on the modernization of the regulatory framework to strengthen the protection of quotas.
- The interaction of the state and business for the implementation of cybersecurity solutions has been strengthened.
- The prospects for the creation of an Industry Information Security Center (OtSIB) to protect critical energy infrastructure are outlined.
The WorkShop stressed the importance of prioritizing the cybersecurity of the fuel and energy sector as the basis for a stable and secure energy system in Kazakhstan.
