The day of the establishment of the Women's Protection Unit from Violence was solemnly celebrated in the capital's police department. It was established in 1999, the official website of the Astana akimat reports.
The solemn event was attended by employees and veterans of the institution, deputies and representatives of the non-governmental sector.
This unit was initially created to ensure the protection of women's constitutional rights and freedoms from unlawful attacks, to prevent and stop violence. However, since January 2025, the powers of the special unit have been expanded. Now it is aimed at protecting all family members.
“This institution has been operating since 1999. But starting this year, we have changed our structure. Previously, the department was engaged in protecting women from violence, but now we also protect children, the elderly and men,” said Gulmira Shrahmetova, head of the Department for Combating Domestic Violence of the Astana City Police Department.
Aliya Zhusupova, senior inspector for special tasks of the Department for Combating Domestic Violence, told how it works in practice.
“There are 48 people in the department throughout the city. Our task is to coordinate work with victims and carry out preventive work. We explain to people that there is a department that they can contact if they have questions or incidents related to domestic violence. Now people are contacting us through the department’s social media pages. There is also a 111 hotline. Or you can call 102,” said Aliya Zhusupova.
The participants of the meeting exchanged experiences with young employees. At the end of the event, a number of police officers were presented with certificates and valuable gifts, while veterans and public figures were awarded letters of appreciation.
