New York, 2 April 2025 - The Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN, Ambassador Kairat Umarov, participated in the Dialogue on Missing Persons with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The issue of missing persons constitutes a serious human rights violation that hinders justice and peace, and its global scale can contribute to the destabilization of society.

In his address, Ambassador K. Umarov emphasized the seriousness of this problem, linked to the uncertainty and suffering faced by the families of missing persons.

Ambassador Umarov stressed Kazakhstan's commitment to addressing this issue. He informed about national-level efforts aimed at strengthening the legal framework to prevent enforced disappearances, ensuring thorough investigations of missing persons cases, improving forensic capacity, and providing support to affected families.

Recognizing the transnational nature of the issue, Ambassador Umarov highlighted the importance of international cooperation, technical assistance, and the exchange of best practices in this area. He expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation with UN bodies, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He recalled that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has repeatedly noted the importance of multilateral engagement for strengthening international and national human rights protection mechanisms, with the UN playing a key role.

Kazakhstan remains committed to constructive engagement on this issue with all relevant parties.
