At a Government meeting chaired by Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov, Vice Minister of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan Kairat Torebayev reported on Kazakhstan's export potential for grain.
He said that Kazakhstan's export potential for cereals is estimated at 12 million tons, of which 7-7.5 million tons are wheat, 1.4 million tons for barley, and 300 thousand tons for corn. The potential for oilseeds is estimated at more than 1 million tons.
"Kazakhstan will continue to supply the markets of Central Asia and Afghanistan, which is about 4.2 million tons. In general, grain exports to China amounted to 1.43 million tons in 2023, showing an increase of 5.5 times year—on-year," Kairat Torebayev said.
The Vice Minister also noted that wheat exports to China increased significantly, reaching 538.8 thousand tons in 2023, which is almost 15 times higher than the previous year.
"This demonstrates the possibility of increasing supplies to China and Asian countries to 1.6 million tons of wheat. It is important to work out the issue of delays at the border due to the requirements of Chinese authorities, as well as difficult conditions such as licenses and quotas for the import of Kazakh grain in China," Kairat Torebayev added.
The Vice Minister also noted that in the context of increasing global demand and decreasing harvests in a number of countries, the market of the European Union countries, such as Italy, Latvia, Spain, is interesting.
The export potential to Turkey and the Middle East countries is almost 1 million tons of wheat.
"It is important to restore supplies to the Iranian market, we are now seeing dynamics in barley, trade finance and logistics issues will be worked out. Work will be intensified to promote the Kazakh wheat brand in new markets such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia, where import growth is projected," Kairat Torebayev stressed.
The Ministry, together with the Food Corporation, has prepared country proposals (offers) indicating logistics routes and export prices. Negotiations were held and preliminary agreements were reached on the markets of Armenia – 600 thousand tons, Italy – 1 million tons. Negotiations are underway on exports to the countries of North Africa – 200 thousand tons.
"In general, given the policy of increasing the level of complexity of exported products, it is important to pay attention to grain processing. This may become a solution to many export problems in the future," Kairat Torebayev explained.
