The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Kazakhstan, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Forestry and Wildlife Committee of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as with the financial support of the Global Environmental Fund, has started implementing a project on the development of sustainability of agricultural production and preservation of ecosystems in North Kazakhstan. Among them are desertification, salinization, erosion, wear and tear from long-term land use and other factors.
The Government of Kazakhstan is improving the legislation to solve these problems. The issues of land degradation are included in the Land and Environmental Codes, as well as in the draft law "On Soil Protection" aimed at land protection and restoration.
"According to the concept of development of the AOC, special attention will be paid to increasing labor productivity, increasing productivity, providing agricultural machinery and seeds, increasing the share of processed products and solving export problems until 2030. In addition, measures to reduce the amount of eroded land in agricultural areas are being considered," noted Yermek Kenjekhanuly, the Vice-Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Within the joint project of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNDP, sustainable land use methods and practices will be tested in Akmola, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan and Pavlodar regions.
"In order to combat land degradation, comprehensive territorial planning is needed to ensure the balance of economic development and preservation of natural resources," said UNDP. Permanent representative in Kazakhstan Katarzhina Vaviernia.
In the framework of the project, it is planned to introduce agro-ecological incentives and financial instruments to support sustainable production of agricultural products, important production-transmission chains, restoration of pastures and optimization of territorial planning.
The project is aimed at restoring Kazakhstan's land resources, developing sustainable agriculture and ensuring long-term environmental stability.
