Kazakhstan's Efforts to Adapt to the Impact of Climate Change in Central Asia were Presented at the OSCE Conference on Climate and Security

Espoo, June 11, 2025 – Adviser to the President of Kazakhstan – Special Representative for International Environmental Cooperation Zulfiya Suleimenova took part in the Conference on Climate and Security, organized by the Finnish Chairpersonship-in-Office in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
At the opening session of the event, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office – Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland Elina Valtonen, as well as the Minister for Climate and Environment of Finland Sari Multala and the OSCE Co-ordinator of Economic and Environmental Activities Ambassador Bakyt Dzhusupov delivered welcoming speeches.
Zulfiya Suleimenova in her speech pointed out the importance of holding this Conference, which enables participants to focus on the most important topics of strengthening security and stability in the OSCE region in the field of environmental protection and climate, promoting sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.
The Special Representative of Kazakhstan noted that Central Asia is the most vulnerable to climate change, with temperatures rising twice as fast as the global average. The region suffers from extreme weather threats such as melting glaciers, desertification and water shortages. In this regard, Kazakhstan's commitment to the global climate agenda and its decisive actions against climate change were emphasized with a clear roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. OSCE participating States were informed of country's intention to hold a climate conference in 2026 to identify specific actions to combat this challenge.
On the sidelines of the Conference, Special Representative Zulfiya Suleimenova held bilateral meetings with the Minister of Climate and the Environment of Finland Sari Multala, the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Teri Hakala, the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office on Climate and Security Kerstin Stendahl and Member of the Finnish Parliament Ville Skinnari.
