Kazakhstan as a Trade Hub for Malaysia: New Directions in Railway Connectivity

June 13, 2025, Kuala Lumpur – Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Malaysia, H.E. Bulat Sugurbayev, held a meeting with Mr. Rani Hisham Samsudin, President of the Malaysian Railways Corporation, to explore opportunities for cooperation in railway transport - both freight and passenger services - that could also open new avenues for tourism attraction for both nations.
Ambassador Sugurbayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s strategic role as a vital transit hub in the Eurasian region, linking East and West, North and South. He also briefed on Kazakhstan’s ongoing efforts to expand its transit and transport capacity through infrastructure modernization, the establishment of logistics hubs in China’s Lianyungang and Xi’an, and the enhancement of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
“The development of reliable and efficient logistics corridors forms the backbone of sustainable trade growth between Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Southeast Asia,” he emphasized.
Mr. Rani Hisham Samsudin shared updates on Malaysia’s railway development, including the 2024 launch of the ASEAN Express freight train connecting Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and China.
The meeting also addressed the potential for Malaysia’s greater entry into the Kazakh and Central Asian markets, with future prospects toward Europe. The Malaysian side expressed interest in exploring Kazakhstan’s experience in railway modernization and international logistics development.
