Water spraying measures aimed at cooling the air are being carried out regularly in the Turan district.

In July 2025, employees of ShymkentSpetsKompleks LLP in Shymkent began to carry out upward water spraying works in the Turan district as a daily novelty. This method is used, especially during extreme heat, to reduce the air temperature along the street and create a comfortable environment for residents.
Upward water spraying is a method of reducing urban warming in the city center. Water is sprayed from high nozzles, and small droplets are dispersed into the asphalt and air. As a result, these water droplets, together with the wind, absorb heat and evaporate, cooling the air. The 2–3 degree drop effect observed in the nozzles in most cases ensures the comfort of residents. In addition, it allows improving air quality by reducing dust.
This method has a number of beneficial effects on the urban ecosystem:
- Improving air quality : Water spraying reduces the amount of particulate matter in the air by suffocating dust and micro-organisms. This is especially important in areas with high traffic, as the ecology of Shymkent is greatly affected by dust from road traffic.
- Microclimate formation : When water evaporates, the temperature can drop by +2–3 °C; this provides a comfortable effect for residents, especially on hot days.
- Preventing dust re-diffusion : Especially during the dry season, water spraying to irrigate ditches and green areas prevents dust from rising again.
Compared to previous methods
Although environmental measures at the city level have been carried out before, water spraying has not been consistently supported. For example, in 2021–2022, in the Turan district, streets and parks were cleaned only during seasonal subbotniks, and water spraying was not used to a significant extent.
Although limited water spraying was carried out in 2023, its results were difficult to assess due to its inconsistent nature. At that time, water was mostly sprayed to irrigate lawns and new seedlings, but no targeted system was organized for air cooling.
Spraying was first carried out in 2024 as a test to reduce the temperature of the fresh air. However, it was only carried out for a short period of time and the impact on the air was not clearly visible. These facilities were limited to individual streets and parks. Today, from 2025, it is being carried out systematically from morning to evening, on a daily basis and in several locations.
Long-term impact on the urban ecosystem
- Greenery support : Plenty of water nourishes lawns and seedlings and promotes their growth.
- Protecting air quality : Reducing dust levels helps prevent the spread of respiratory diseases and reduce toxicants in the air.
- Public health : Areas with cool water sprays — especially in public areas for the elderly and children — tend to serve as fertile and refreshing recreation areas.
The water sprinkler system introduced in the Turan district is a new direction in integrating nature into the urban environment. While previous years' measures were formal, starting in 2025, there has been a shift to sustainable, scientifically based, and ecosystem-friendly methods. This is an important initiative to preserve the health of the city's population, the natural balance, and the constant comfort of residents during hot days. The city authorities and the municipal sector will continue to implement such environmental measures.
