On August 27, 2025, the “Clean City” program of the “Jibek Joly” TV channel this time focused on Shymkent. As usual, the presenters were divided into two groups and visited the city's landmarks, residential buildings, and the private sector. They got acquainted with the sanitary conditions, environmental situation, city culture, and the level of improvement, and presented the collected data to experts.
A picturesque city always attracts attention. Streets covered with green flags, hospitable residents - everything attracts visitors. It is no secret that many people who come to Shymkent want to stay here. The results of the work carried out in recent years are visible. As part of the "Clean Kazakhstan" environmental campaign, various events, sabbaticals are held every day, and reconstruction projects are being implemented. Both the streets of the city and bus stops are kept clean. Public transport stops are washed every day and cleaned with special shampoo.
To carry out these works, the requirements for contracting organizations have been tightened, and the number of equipment has increased. However, the most important thing is that ordinary workers are at the helm of this heavy equipment. For example, Saule Keneskyzy has been working in the city's cleaning department for more than 20 years.
– When I first started working as a cleaner, I was shy and hid my face from people. Later I realized how important this work is. Now I don’t feel any pressure, on the contrary, I hear gratitude from residents. Our salary has doubled in the last two years. We receive bonuses every quarter. We go to work at six in the morning. We do our best to keep the city clean, both in the cold of winter and in the heat of summer, – he says.
It is thanks to the work of people like these that the city is flourishing.
However, there are also unresolved issues in the large metropolis. In particular, the problem of household waste in the private sector worries residents. Although special garbage bins are installed on the streets, they are not cleaned in a timely manner. As a result, the air smells bad. However, residents do not throw garbage indiscriminately, but put it in special bags and collect it.
The problem is that the equipment that collects those bags does not arrive on time. Usually, garbage is supposed to be collected once a week, but on some streets, there have been cases where garbage has not been collected for three weeks. This is one of the main complaints of residents.
When we think of Shymkent, the first thing that comes to mind is the markets. There are officially 19 trading centers in the city. Four of them have been renovated in recent years. Previously, chaotic and wild trade was rampant, but today it is being brought into order. Favorable conditions have been created and areas that meet sanitary requirements are beginning to appear.
The Clean City program visited Shymkent last year. One of the things that caught the attention of the presenters was the number of newly built houses that looked old on the outside, with leaking pipes and yards full of garbage. This year, the program team inspected those houses again.
Some houses have improved in condition, with exteriors renovated and courtyards landscaped. However, there are still issues that need to be resolved.
One of the positive changes concerns the area, which has been renamed "Koksai" or "Zhasyl Sai". Last year, residents of this area complained about the condition of old houses. This year, new construction has begun here, and the first residents have already moved into new multi-storey buildings.
This is the result of the "Renovation" program, which is being implemented at the initiative of the President. The number of rooms in the new apartments is the same as in the previous houses, but the total area is twice as large. In the first stage of the program, 76 families from 8 houses received new housing. In total, it is planned to provide 217 residents from 23 houses with new housing.
The present and future of Shymkent are being shaped by the sweat of the brow of ordinary working people. The cleaning work that brings beauty to the city has not stopped for a moment. However, there are also problems such as garbage collection in the private sector, the quality of some houses, and the slowness of public utilities.
As the "Clean City" program shows, there are both good things happening in the city and problems that need to be solved. Shymkent's appearance is improving every year, but in the future, demands on the city administration and public utilities will increase.
