On September 17, 2025, the capital of Kazakhstan hosted the opening of the VIII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions under the theme “Dialogue of religions: synergy for the sake of the future.”

The Plenary session of the Congress was solemnly opened by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

In his keynote address the Head of State emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue as a key instrument for fostering global stability, mutual respect, trust and peace. President Tokayev noted that all major religious traditions uphold common humanistic values such as peace, justice, compassion and love for one’s neighbor. Kazakhstan remains firmly committed to these values and categorically rejects any attempts to use religion to justify violence, extremism or hatred. The President also outlined Kazakhstan’s vision for advancing interfaith and intercultural dialogue in the years ahead.

A message of greetings to the VIII Congress was sent by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

The Holy Father stressed that when believers of different traditions act together, it demonstrates that faith has the power to unite rather than divide. He called on religious leaders to speak with one voice and join efforts in responding to global challenges. His Holiness also remarked that synergy implies cooperation – not only among people, but also with God – reflecting a deep awareness of the interdependence among individuals and nations.

A delegation of the Holy See, led by Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, arrived in Astana to participate in the Congress.

This year the Congress brought together over 100 spiritual leaders, representatives of international organizations, government institutions, academia, prominent public figures and distinguished theological experts.

On September 18, the Congress continued its work. As part of the Program of the VIII Congress, thematic sessions and expert roundtables were held. In addition, a Special Session on the Protection of Religious Sites was conducted in cooperation with the UN Alliance of Civilizations, along with the II Forum of Young Religious Leaders.

Against the backdrop of growing geopolitical turbulence and confrontation, military conflicts and other pressing global challenges, including climate change, the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana provided as a unique platform for constructive interreligious and intercivilizational dialogue.
