Kazakhstan and Romania are expanding regional cooperation

From October 6 to 8, 2025, a Romanian delegation led by the Chairman of the Constanța County Council, Florin Mitroi, paid an official visit to Kazakhstan.
The delegation included the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Kazakhstan, Mădălina Lupu, President of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mihai Daraban, Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Romania Corina Martin, as well as representatives of the Romanian business community.
A meeting was held in Astana with Murat Karimsakov, Chairman of the Board of the Foreign Trade Chamber of Kazakhstan. The parties discussed the current state and prospects for the development of trade and economic cooperation, with a focus on strengthening direct ties between chambers of commerce, revitalizing the Kazakh–Romanian Business Council, and organizing joint business forums and B2B meetings.
Murat Karimsakov emphasized the strategic nature of relations with Romania, noting the growing trade turnover and both countries’ involvement in the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route as a platform for new business opportunities.
In Aktau the Romanian delegation held a meeting with the Akim of Mangystau Region, Nurdaulet Kilybay. The meeting focused on interregional cooperation, investment collaboration, and the implementation of cultural and tourism initiatives. Priority projects in port infrastructure and green energy were presented.
Following the meeting, a Memorandum of cooperation was signed between Mangystau Region and Constanța County, aimed at developing partnerships in economic, social, and cultural spheres. Currently, five companies with Romanian participation operate in the Mangystau region.
As part of the visit, the delegation also visited the Yessenov Caspian University of Technologies and Engineering, where possible formats for cooperation in engineering education, academic exchanges, and applied research were discussed.
Afterwards, a business forum and B2B negotiations were held with the participation of Kazakh companies from the maritime and logistics sectors. Discussions focused on expanding maritime transport, port modernization, and involving the Romanian side in projects related to the development of the Trans-Caspian route.
At the end of the visit, the delegation visited the Kuryk Port, the Sarzha Terminal, and the Aktau International Sea Commercial Port, where they familiarized themselves with their logistical capabilities and ongoing investment projects.
The visit confirmed the high level of mutual trust and the shared interest in developing long-term partnerships in energy, transport, logistics, education, and science.
At the end of 2024, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Romania reached 2.92 billion US dollars, which is 1.6% more than in 2023. In the first eight months of 2025, the volume of mutual trade amounted to 1.6 billion dollars, with Kazakhstan's exports increasing by 9%.
Key exports include oil, uranium, gas, and coal, while imports mainly consist of pharmaceuticals and electrical equipment.
There are 35 companies with Kazakh capital registered in Romania and 39 with Romanian participation in Kazakhstan.
