In modern society, the issues of ecology, efficient use of water resources and modernization of the municipal sector are of particular importance. One of the real achievements in this direction in Kazakhstan is the Shymkent City Complex Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWTP) . This facility is considered one of the most advanced complexes not only in Kazakhstan, but also among the CIS countries.

The KOS complex was modernized using Polish technology and is now comparable in efficiency to the most advanced European municipal water treatment systems. A special feature is the biogas plant with an annual capacity of 4.5 million kWh . This plant converts waste into energy and is considered the only such system in Central Asia.

Thanks to this technology, the KOS self-provides 50% of its electricity and 100% of its heat . Additional electricity is provided by gas generators and a small hydroelectric power station. In general, the complex covers 90% of its electricity through its own production , which is a huge indicator for the utility sector.

LLP "Water Resources-Marketing" was the first to introduce the "Ydro Process" biotechnology in the CIS. This technology is aimed at reducing excess sludge and eliminating unpleasant odors.

Advantages of the technology:

  • 95% removal of excess sludge ;

  • complete disappearance of unpleasant odor;

  • No need to bury sludge in special areas.

This will save about 200 million tenge annually. This figure is an important economic indicator for the utility sector.

Starting in 2022 , a chlorella strain developed by the Petropavlovsk Scientific and Technical Center will be used in the Burzhar water reservoir, a reservoir where purified water is stored.

Chlorella functions as follows:

  • additional purification and disinfection of treated water;

  • promoting the development of ichthyofauna by releasing oxygen into the water;

  • maintaining biological balance in water.

Today, 80,000 young fish of various species have been released into the reservoir. In addition, the purified water is used to irrigate technical agricultural crops in the Ordabasyn district.

Chlorella technology saves approximately 900 million tenge annually , as other disinfection methods, such as ultraviolet irradiation or reverse osmosis, are much more expensive.

LLP "Su Resursy-Marketing" is not limited only to technological innovations, but also pays special attention to green areas and landscaping . Thousands of seedlings and shrubs are planted near the complex, improving air quality and creating a microclimate.

This is not just an aesthetic appearance, but a manifestation of the complex's harmonious functioning with nature.

The technologies and experience used have brought the Shymkent WWTP to a level comparable to the most advanced European water treatment systems . While in other countries, municipal facilities face problems due to old equipment and financial shortages, the Shymkent experience proves that sustainable results can be achieved by investing in innovation.

The complex, being energy independent, environmentally safe, and economically efficient , can serve as a model for other cities in Kazakhstan.

Shymkent Municipal Urban Development Center has achieved tangible results in maintaining a clean urban environment, efficient use of water resources, and environmental protection. The biogas plant, "Ydro Process" technology, chlorella strain, and the development of green zones make the complex a unique and internationally competitive facility .

Thus, the Shymkent city wastewater treatment plant can compete with the best European water treatment systems today, and in some areas even surpass them.

These achievements not only improve the environmental situation of the city, but also demonstrate an example of innovative management and the use of technology in the municipal sector.
