In Shymkent, large-scale measures aimed at improving environmental safety and protecting the population from natural hazards continue to be implemented. At the direction of the city's mayor, work is underway to strengthen riverbanks and modernize hydraulic infrastructure. One of the key projects is the Badam River system, where the next phase of dam and bank protection works in the Badam-2 area began on November 1, 2025.
The Badam River is one of the city's main waterways. The river plays a significant role in providing favorable living conditions, impacting the ecosystem, and protecting adjacent areas from drought. However, climate change in recent years, increased precipitation, and natural erosion of the riverbank have led to an increased risk of flooding. During certain seasons, the risk of river overflow increases significantly, posing a danger to residential buildings, infrastructure, and public spaces. Therefore, riverbank reinforcement has become a priority for city authorities.
The contractor, Hydrolife 2050, is carrying out the site work. The work is being carried out using modern equipment and proven engineering solutions. Sixteen pieces of specialized equipment are involved in the construction process, including:
crawler and wheeled excavators;
compaction machines;
loading equipment;
dump trucks and other heavy construction equipment;
tractor equipment and road machinery.
The contractor is working intensively, complying with all technological and environmental requirements. Particular attention is paid to the safety and durability of the structures.
The project has entered its second phase, which includes a range of engineering activities:
Preparation and planning of dam slopes for further strengthening of the structure.
Installation of a reinforcing metal frame to ensure the durability and stability of the structure.
Concreting the coastline in areas most susceptible to erosion.
Additional soil strengthening and installation of protective structures.
Cleaning and regulating the riverbed to ensure stable water flow.
Each stage is overseen by specialists—engineers, ecologists, and technical oversight. All materials are tested for compliance with state standards.
The project's primary goal is to protect the population and prevent emergencies related to floods and seasonal water level rises. Implementation of these projects will enable:
reduce the risk of flooding of private and multi-story residential buildings;
protect utility networks, roads and social facilities;
create a comfortable and safe urban environment;
improve the ecological state of the water body;
prepare the area for further improvement.
New recreational areas, landscaped embankments, and walking routes for residents to enjoy are planned along the river. This will make the area more attractive for both residential use and small business development.
When implementing the project, the need to preserve the natural balance is taken into account:
the river bed is preserved within its natural contours;
further soil erosion will be prevented;
the vegetation cover on the banks will be restored after the work is completed;
Sanitary standards and environmental safety requirements are observed.
The project is based on the principle of minimal intervention in natural ecosystems while maximizing protection of the territory.
The Badam River project is part of a larger program to develop Shymkent's hydraulic infrastructure. Similar projects are planned for future projects on other waterways in the city, such as the Koshkar-Ata and Sairamsu rivers. This will create a unified security perimeter and ensure comprehensive urban safety.
Work on Badam will continue in stages to ensure the reliability of the structures and cover the entire length of the most vulnerable sections of the coast.
For city authorities, it's important not only to modernize infrastructure but also to protect people from natural hazards. Timely measures will help avoid serious consequences and financial losses in the future. Strengthening the coastline contributes to the city's sustainable development and residents' confidence in the future.
The work being carried out in the Badam-2 district is a significant project aimed at increasing security, improving infrastructure, and creating a favorable urban environment. Once completed, the area will be not only secure but also well-maintained, opening up extensive opportunities for further development.
