Systematic work is being carried out in Shymkent to develop hydraulic infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents. One of these measures is to strengthen the dam and banks of the Badam River. This river is one of the main waterways of the city and there are flood-prone areas along it. The city authorities and engineering services are currently carrying out comprehensive work to strengthen safety measures along the river.

The Badam River has been a source of concern for city residents for many years. In the spring, during snowmelt and heavy rainfall, the water level in the river rises sharply. As a result, there is a risk of flooding some residential and farm buildings. Strengthening the dam and banks is considered one of the most effective ways to prevent such situations.

During the implementation of the project, engineers are paying special attention to increasing the strength of the dam and preparing it to absorb large volumes of water. After reconstruction, the dam will be able to withstand extreme hydrological conditions. This will protect the land along the river from erosion and flooding. Also, these measures will help to avoid new construction sites in dangerous areas, increasing the safety of residents.

Currently, work is underway on a section of more than 5 kilometers. Next year, similar work is planned on another section of the river in the Enbekshi district. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of flood-prone areas in the city.

As Mukhamedzhan Seitzhanov, head of the department of the Shymkent city administration for the development of a comfortable urban environment, noted, the total length of the Badam River in Shymkent is 49 kilometers. In 2013–2017, 9.7 kilometers of the dam were repaired in the Al-Farabiy district. On the instructions of the akim, another 9 kilometers of the river were repaired within the framework of the Road Map in 2021–2024. And in 2025, work is underway in the Abay district.

The new master plan will include all areas along the river that are at risk of landslides and landslides. About 1,500 people live in these areas. By including them in the master plan, construction in dangerous areas will be prohibited, and new housing construction will be prevented. This step is important for ensuring the safety of residents and preventing natural disasters.

As reported by the Deputy Akim of Shymkent, Sarsen Kuranbek, 13 landslide-prone zones have been identified in the city, with a total area of 497 thousand square meters, where 109 objects are located and 433 people live. In addition, 29 landslide-prone zones have been identified, with a total area of 933 thousand square meters, where 328 objects are located and 1,129 people live. Thus, the city authorities say that they take into account all risks associated with natural disasters.

Modern engineering solutions are being used to strengthen the Badam River dam and embankment. Safety along the river is being enhanced by using soil stabilization, hydraulic structures, and structures with high water absorption capacity. The quality of work and safety standards are strictly monitored, ensuring the durability and effectiveness of engineering solutions.

In addition, as part of the project, work is underway to restore the city's irrigation network. In 2025, about 700 million tenge were spent on this purpose. The main task is to ensure full water circulation, as the current ditches are unable to withstand the volume of precipitation and floods. The restoration of the irrigation system will allow for more efficient water distribution, reduce the load on the river, and reduce the risk of floods.

Strengthening the embankments and banks is not limited to ensuring safety. These measures are aimed at improving the city's infrastructure, increasing the confidence of residents, and ensuring the safety of housing. Modern engineering solutions, strengthening dams, and strict control over construction are important factors in protecting city residents from floods.

The works will be carried out in accordance with environmental standards. During the construction process, the ecosystem of the river, the banks and the adjacent areas will be monitored. Waste and soil pollution will not be allowed, and special measures will be taken to avoid harming the habitat of plants and animals. Thus, engineering and environmental solutions will be coordinated.

As a result of the project, the strength of the Badam River dam and embankment will be increased, reducing the risk of floods and mudflows. Responsible specialists and city residents note the effectiveness of safety measures along the river and positively assess the development of the city's environmental and engineering infrastructure.

Reducing the risk of flooding, landslides, and erosion is a strategically important measure for the city. In addition, the restoration of the city's irrigation system will allow for the efficient use of water resources and reduce the load during floods.

In conclusion, the strengthening of the Badam River dam and embankment, the restoration of the irrigation network, and the inclusion of hazard zones in the general plan are aimed at creating a comprehensive system for protecting the city of Shymkent from floods, landslides, and natural disasters. These measures will increase the safety of residents, strengthen the city's infrastructure, and ensure environmental sustainability.
