Tunisia’s Trade Policy Review Held Under Kazakhstan’s Chairmanship at the WTO

Geneva, 25 November 2025 – On 25 and 27 November, the fourth Trade Policy Review of Tunisia is being held at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization under the chairmanship of H.E. Ambassador Kairat Torebayev, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the WTO and Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body.
The delegation of Tunisia, led by H.E. Mr. Samir Abid, Minister of Trade and Export Development, presented updated information on the implementation of its economic reform agenda, including the application of the Investment Incentives Code, efforts to improve the business climate, the expansion of digital solutions in customs administration, the enhancement of transparency in public governance, and the reform of state-owned enterprises. WTO Members commended Tunisia’s commitment to the multilateral trading system as well as its efforts to facilitate trade and strengthen transparency.
During the discussions, Members addressed issues related to the increase in import tariffs and instances where applied duties exceeded bound commitments under the World Trade Organization, the efficiency of import licensing procedures and the timely submission of notifications, as well as progress in negotiations on a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the European Union and the development of African regional integration. Members also expressed interest in Tunisia’s plans to modernize its telecommunications and transport-logistics infrastructure and underlined the importance of strengthening cooperation within regional initiatives, including the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Chair Torebayev thanked Tunisia and WTO Members for their constructive engagement and emphasized that the continuation of reforms will be essential to strengthening Tunisia’s competitiveness and securing long-term sustainable development.
These Reviews play a crucial role in strengthening the transparency and predictability of WTO Members’ trade regimes, supporting ongoing economic reforms and facilitating their deeper integration into the multilateral trading system.
The next Review under Kazakhstan’s chairmanship will take place on 1 and 3 December 2025 and will cover the Trade Policy Review of Thailand.
