A serviceman of military unit 5513 in the city of Taraz, Regional Command “Oñtüstik”, of the National Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Private Bakhtiyarkhan Tursynkhodzhayev, is fluent in seven languages. While on patrol duty, he communicates with citizens in Kazakh, Uzbek, Azerbaijani, Russian, Turkish, English, and French.
Bakhtiyarkhan learned French during a trip to France with his father, where he had planned to pursue studies in architecture. Today, the language skills acquired abroad help him in everyday communication and in carrying out tasks related to maintaining public order.
The guardsman is 22 years old. He is the eldest in his family, which includes younger brothers and a sister. For them, he serves as an example of responsibility, discipline, and a constant desire for self-development. His sister is also passionate about learning languages and already speaks five. The family firmly believes that their father’s words — “Those who know languages will never be without a path in life” — truly work in practice.
According to Private Tursynkhodzhayev himself, mastering one language takes him an average of two to three months of preparation. Even while completing his compulsory military service, he continues his studies. The unit’s commanders support this initiative and assist him in selecting the necessary foreign-language literature.
Bakhtiyarkhan’s achievements are not limited to linguistics. He is a Master of Sports in Wushu Sanda and a bronze medalist of the Republic of Kazakhstan Championship. Sport, like language learning, has become an integral part of his inner discipline and way of life.
In his free time from service, he shares his knowledge with fellow servicemen by conducting short foreign language classes. For some, this is an opportunity to improve conversational skills, while for others it becomes the first step toward learning a new language.
