New York, 18 March 2026 - The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Kairat Umarov, participated in a high-level event dedicated to the sustainable development of mountain regions, held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The event was co-organized by the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), within the broader framework of international efforts to strengthen cooperation in advancing the sustainable development of mountain regions, including through the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In his statement, Ambassador Umarov underscored that Kazakhstan, endowed with diverse ecosystems, including mountainous areas, is increasingly facing a range of environmental challenges, such as climate change, glacier retreat, desertification and water scarcity. He noted that these trends have direct implications for food security, sustainable development and regional stability in Central Asia.

The Ambassador emphasized the importance of enhancing regional cooperation and multilateral engagement, as well as mobilizing financial, technological and scientific resources to effectively address environmental challenges. In this regard, he informed participants about the forthcoming Regional Ecological Summit to be held in Astana in April 2026, which will serve as a platform for advancing practical solutions in the areas of climate adaptation, sustainable water management and biodiversity conservation.

Furthermore, Ambassador Umarov highlighted the establishment of the United Nations Regional Centre for the Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. He noted that the Centre will play a key role in strengthening partnerships, attracting investments and translating global commitments into concrete regional and national initiatives.
