Officers of Institution No.51 of the Department of criminally-executive system in the North Kazakhstan region have thwarted an attempt to deliver prohibited substances disguised as a regular food parcel.

During the inspection of a package addressed to one of the inmates, officers became suspicious of caramel candies. A thorough examination revealed small packets containing a brown powdery substance hidden inside two of the sweets.

A forensic analysis confirmed that the seized substance was opium. The total weight of the drug substance amounted to 0.9 grams.

A criminal case has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan — illegal manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation, or sale of narcotic substances.

According to the Department, this is the first attempt to smuggle drugs that has been prevented since the beginning of the current year. However, last year, officers of Institution No. 48 prevented three similar attempts to deliver prohibited substances.

Efforts to ensure law and order and to prevent the entry of prohibited items into correctional facilities continue on an ongoing basis.
