– Harrogate (United Kingdom), 25 April 2026. The prestigious international robotics competition – the UK FIRST LEGO League Championship, organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology – took place in Harrogate.
A team of school students from Astana, representing the Astrobot robotics and programming centre, delivered an outstanding performance, winning two of the competition’s top awards:
— 1st place in the Robot Game category;
— Overall Champion (best team of the tournament).
The championship brought together 68 teams from across the world, including the United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Germany and Slovakia. The high level of competition makes the victory of the Kazakh team particularly significant and prestigious.
The team included students from leading schools such as KIS, Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, Phystech, Ardingly and Quantum STEM. Under the guidance of coaches Gizat Makhanov, Alisher Ulkhanov and Aidana Satilda, the participants demonstrated a high level of engineering skills, creativity and strong teamwork.
The team earned the right to represent Kazakhstan following their successful performance at the Central Asia FIRST Championship, held in Astana in February this year.
In addition to the robotics competition, the students presented an innovative project, an online database of Kazakhstan’s archaeological artefacts, artifacts.kz. During the presentation, the team demonstrated the full development cycle, from research and concept to technical implementation and collaboration with specialised institutions.
The project received high praise from the judges not only for its technical excellence, but also for its contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage. The team was also commended for showcasing Kazakhstan’s cultural identity on the international stage.
Their participation was enriched by cultural elements: the students wore outfits with national motifs, introduced guests to Kazakh traditions, and demonstrated traditional games such as asyk atu and lyanga, which attracted strong interest from both participants and organisers.
The organisers expressed their appreciation to the Kazakh team for their high level of preparation and for contributing to international cooperation in education and technology.
As President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has previously noted, it is precisely such progressive and talented youth who will drive the country forward, elevate it to new heights, and make the world proud of its achievements.
