Genk, May 5, 2026 — On the eve of Defender of the Fatherland Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the staff of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in the Kingdom of Belgium, together with the Office of the Military Attaché and members of the Kazakh diaspora, took part in a wreath-laying ceremony in the city of Genk.
The event was dedicated to commemorating soldiers who heroically fell during the Second World War. Flowers were laid at a memorial to the Belgian Resistance, whose ranks also included Soviet soldiers.
Approximately 350 Soviet soldiers are buried across Belgium. The largest burial site is located in Genk, Limburg Province, and contains around 70 graves. At the center of the memorial is an inscription reading: “Eternal memory to the Soviet soldiers who fell on Limburg soil, 1941–1944.”
Among those laid to rest are natives of Kazakhstan, Togaybay Uvaliev and Nuradim Bissenov, who fell in 1944.
Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Belgium Roman Vassilenko noted: “Preserving the memory of our ancestors’ heroism is an integral part of our historical responsibility and a foundation for educating future generations. Such commemorative events strengthen the continuity between generations and remind us of the value of peace and harmony.”
The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan will continue its efforts to preserve historical memory and to honor the legacy of those who defended their homeland.
