Discussions Held in Bangkok on the Outcomes of the 82nd UN ESCAP Session and Kazakhstan’s Water Security Initiatives

5 May 2026, Bangkok - A meeting took place with Ms. Lin Yang, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and Mr. Mitchell Hsieh, Principal Officer in the Office of the Executive Secretary of ESCAP.

During the meeting, the outcomes of the recently concluded 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) were discussed, noting its practical orientation and the agreements reached aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Particular attention was paid to decisions adopted in the areas of digitalization, sustainable development, and the expansion of multilateral cooperation.

Views were also exchanged on the further implementation of the agreed outcomes, as well as on joint projects across a broad range of socio-economic development areas.

In turn, information was also shared on the outcomes of the Regional Ecological Summit held in Astana from 22 to 24 April 2026, during which initiatives aimed at strengthening water security were discussed, and the first round of international consultations on the establishment of a new International Water Organization initiated by H.E. Mr Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, was held.

It was further noted that the event addressed issues related to the future architecture of global water governance, the mandate and functions of the prospective institution, as well as the role of the United Nations in coordinating the water agenda.

International diplomats were also briefed on the large-scale constitutional reforms underway in Kazakhstan, as well as on the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held under the new Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
