Fake iPhone Purchase: A New Scam Scheme

The Center for Forecasting Criminal Threats and Public Safety Risks of the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of the General Prosecutor's Office warns of a new internet fraud scheme. According to foreign sources (https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/apple-account-change-alerts-abused-to-send- phishing-emails/, https://itspeaker.ru/news/khakery-atakuyut-polzovateley-apple/, https://securitymedia.org/news/list/apple-prevratili-v-fishing-retranslyator-moshenniki- vshivayut-primanku-v-legitimnye-uvedomleniya.html) criminals are sending fake purchase notifications for an iPhone device using the PayPal payment system. Such emails look highly credible because criminals use the address appleid@id.apple.com and spoof the message content. The email text informs the user about an allegedly made iPhone purchase and suggests canceling the transaction. To do this, it is recommended to contact "customer support" at the specified phone number. During the call, scammers convince the user that their Apple ID account has been hacked and under the pretext of protecting the account:
offer to install software for remote access to the device;
request confidential data, including passwords;
use psychological techniques, creating a sense of urgency and threat. It is recommended to follow basic digital security measures:
do not click on suspicious links or call numbers from emails;
check purchase information only through official services;
do not install third-party programs;
use two-factor authentication.
Upon receiving such notifications, one should immediately contact the official support service and also report to law enforcement agencies.
Stay vigilant: do not trust any unexpected notifications.
