Inspection and Imaging Systems (IIS) enable non-intrusive inspection (without opening cargo compartments) of large vehicles and containers within a minimal amount of time. However, the key element in this technological chain remains the human factor — the Image Analysis and Comparison Operator (IACO), whose qualifications determine the detection of hidden threats.

The scanning process generates a highly detailed X-ray image, which is transmitted to the operator’s workstation. Image analysis is a comprehensive process that includes several key stages:

1. Studying cargo geometry, identifying unusual dark areas, voids, or foreign objects hidden within the structural cavities of the vehicle.

2. Physicochemical comparison: Modern IIS equipment can differentiate materials according to their effective atomic number ( ). This makes it possible to distinguish organic substances (such as narcotics, contraband cigarettes, or food products) from inorganic materials (metals, machinery, etc.).

The practice of IIS image analysis demonstrates high efficiency in detecting the following categories of violations:

Goods concealed under the guise of cheap and heavy cargo (for example, building materials or tiles), while expensive electronics or branded clothing are hidden inside. Such discrepancies are clearly visible on scans due to differences in density and packaging structure.

Illegal concealment of prohibited substances: Identification of high-density zones that may indicate hidden weapons, ammunition, explosive, or radioactive materials.

The operator informs the head of the customs post or the acting official about any identified suspicions.

IIS image analysis has proven to be an indispensable preventive tool in combating customs violations. It enables the detection of sophisticated smuggling schemes without slowing down logistics flows.
