New York, 17 June, 2026 - An open debate of the UN Security Council on the topic of "Women, Peace and Security" was held at UN Headquarters under the chairmanship of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia.
The meeting was attended by approximately one hundred speakers, including UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous, as well as representatives of member states and civil society.
In his address, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN, Kairat Umarov noted that the global community remains far from fulfilling its commitments to fully involve women in peace negotiations and decision-making processes, despite the vital role inclusive peace processes play in a sustainable global future.
Particular attention was paid to Kazakhstan's systematic efforts in this area, including the successful implementation of the first National Action Plan to carry out the historic UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which serves as a global framework for protecting women's rights and promoting their role in peace processes.
Furthermore, the launch of the development of a second interagency plan was announced, aimed at further expanding women's capacity to strengthen stability.
The Kazakhstan diplomat also highlighted the country's key achievements in protecting women's rights and ensuring equal opportunities - initiatives led by the Head of State - including the Action Plan on Human Rights and the Rule of Law, as well as new legislation designed to strengthen the protection of women's rights and ensure child safety.
Special emphasis was placed on Kazakhstan's practical contribution to international stability through the successful participation of Kazakhstani servicewomen in UN peacekeeping operations in Lebanon, Western Sahara, and the Golan Heights.
