Over the past two years, the Canine Center of Military Unit 6654 of the National Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan has raised 60 service dog puppies. In the near future, many of them will join National Guard units and begin performing service and operational duties.
Located in the city of Alatau, the Canine Center is the only facility within the National Guard that both trains military dog handlers and breeds service dogs. The center raises German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherds. Last year, it successfully welcomed its first litter of Dutch Shepherd puppies, expanding the range of service dog breeds used by the National Guard.
From their first months of life, the puppies are carefully assessed for temperament, activity, and working potential. By the age of six months, specialists determine each dog's future specialization. Some are trained to detect narcotics, others to locate explosives, while others are prepared for patrol duties, tracking, and apprehending offenders.
Service dogs trained at the center work alongside National Guard personnel every day. They assist in maintaining public order, securing major public events, detecting prohibited substances and weapons, and searching for missing persons.
In 2025 alone, National Guard canine teams carried out more than 3,500 operational missions, with over 120 resulting in successful outcomes. Service dogs helped detain 81 suspects involved in criminal offenses, detect and seize more than 210 kilograms of plant-based and synthetic narcotics, uncover 14 bladed weapons and 7 firearms, and locate 17 missing persons.
Every puppy raised at the center is a future four-legged partner to a serviceman, whose training often plays a vital role in protecting public safety and ensuring the successful completion of operational missions.
