Cooperation in Urban Planning and Contemporary Architecture

Brasilia, August 19, 2026 — a meeting was held at the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Federative Republic of Brazil between Ambassador of Kazakhstan Bolat Nussupov and José Fernando Aparecido de Oliveira, President of the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation.

The meeting focused on prospects for developing bilateral cooperation in urban planning, contemporary architecture and design, as well as the training of professionals in the architectural and construction sectors.

The President of the Foundation noted that, as early as 2008, Oscar Niemeyer had developed a design for a Cultural Center in Astana. He also emphasized the relevance of the renowned architect’s ideas and expressed the Brazilian side’s readiness to contribute to the realization of Niemeyer’s vision.

Ambassador Bolat Nussupov briefed his interlocutor on the modern architectural development of Astana, as well as on the large-scale political and institutional reforms being implemented in Kazakhstan.

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to resume dialogue between the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation and potential Kazakh partners on projects of mutual interest.

 Background: The Oscar Niemeyer Foundation (Fundação Oscar Niemeyer) is a non-profit organization established in 1988 to preserve, protect and promote the architectural and cultural heritage of the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The Foundation is engaged in preserving his legacy, managing copyright, and organizing exhibitions, lectures and educational programmes dedicated to contemporary architecture and urban planning. Its headquarters and cultural complex are located in the city of Niterói, State of Rio de Janeiro.
