On August 19, a Forum on Meat Product Quality was held in Astana as part of the plenary session of ISO/TC 34/SC 6 "Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs and Products Thereof."

The event was organized by the Committee for Technical Regulation and Metrology of the Ministry of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the RSE "KazStandard." Representatives from ISO, government bodies, businesses, scientific organizations, and industry experts participated in the forum.
One of the key topics was expanding Kazakhstan's participation in international standardization. This year, the country is participating in the elections to the ISO Council and intends to increase the number of domestic experts in international technical committees.

Kazakhstan's main initiative was the proposal to develop the first international ISO standard for ready-to-eat horsemeat products. Currently, there is no single international document for this product category, which leads to differences in requirements for terminology, classification, labeling, and quality assessment and can create barriers to export.

The proposed basis for the future standard is GOST 34921–2023 "National Horsemeat Products. Technical Specifications." The document could cover traditional products — kazy, shuzhuk, zhal, zhaya, as well as smoked and sausage products.

Kazakhstan is ready to form and lead an international working group to prepare the draft standard and its further discussion with producing countries.

Deputy Chairman of the CTRM MTI RK Kanat Kabylbekov noted that Kazakhstan's participation in the ISO Council elections will allow for more active involvement in international decision-making processes and the promotion of initiatives that serve the interests of the domestic economy.
The forum also discussed the development of cooperation between Kazakhstan and China in the field of standardization and conformity assessment, including joint research, interlaboratory comparisons, and improvement of testing methods.

Following the forum, further areas of cooperation were identified: development of an ISO standard for horsemeat products, expansion of participation by Kazakhstani experts and businesses in international standardization, development of the laboratory base, and strengthening of international cooperation.
