In his Addresses to the Nation, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has repeatedly emphasized the importance of developing Kazakhstan’s domestic engineering industry as a key driver of the country’s economic modernization and diversification. Among the key priorities are increasing the production of high value-added goods and deepening the localization of manufacturing.

Today, Kazakhstan is developing a comprehensive railway engineering ecosystem, encompassing the production of locomotives and railway cars, the manufacture of components, as well as maintenance and repair services.

The industry comprises more than 60 enterprises, employing around 8,500 people. In partnership with Wabtec, Alstom, and Stadler, Kazakhstani manufacturers produce railway equipment and components for both domestic and international markets.

One notable example is the Electric Locomotive Assembly Plant in Astana. The plant has been operating since 2012 and has produced more than 450 electric locomotives to date. Today, the company continues to expand its manufacturing and service capabilities, deepen localization, and develop its export potential.
