Vienna, 14-18 September 2026 – Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi highlighted the high potential of Kazakhstan’s nuclear sector, the country’s commitment to the principles of the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy, and its contribution to the development of international cooperation.

The IAEA Director General made these remarks during the official opening of Kazakhstan’s national pavilion at the international exhibition held on the margins of the 70^th session of the IAEA General Conference. Kazakhstan’s exhibition showcased to the international community the potential of the country’s nuclear sector, its scientific and technological achievements, as well as promising areas for international cooperation.

The Kazakh delegation to the 70^th session of the IAEA General Conference, held from 14 to 18 September 2026, was headed by Gumar Sergazin, Deputy Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy.

During the General Debate, Kazakhstan delivered a national statement outlining the country’s key priorities in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the further development of the nuclear sector, the strengthening of nuclear and radiation safety, the expansion of scientific and technical cooperation, and the training of qualified personnel.

On the margins of the General Conference, the Kazakh delegation organized three thematic side events.

The side event “35^th Anniversary of the Closure of the Semipalatinsk Test Site: From National Tragedy to National Pride” focused on Kazakhstan’s experience in addressing its nuclear legacy and the consequences of nuclear testing, as well as on the development of modern nuclear science.

The side event “Developing Human Capital for Kazakhstan’s First Nuclear Power Plants” brought together representatives of Kazakhstan and the international expert community to discuss the training of specialists for the development of the country’s nuclear energy sector, human capital development, and the enhancement of educational infrastructure.

The thematic event “Advancing Cancer Care in Kazakhstan: From Radiopharmaceutical Production to Proton Therapy” focused on the development of nuclear technologies in healthcare, including the production of radiopharmaceuticals and the introduction of advanced methods for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.

Kazakhstan’s participation in the 70^th session of the IAEA General Conference provided an important platform for presenting the country’s scientific and technological expertise to the international community. The high-level recognition of Kazakhstan’s potential by the IAEA leadership, together with the substantive programme of the national pavilion and thematic events, underscored the importance of international cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and created additional opportunities for its further development.

Kazakhstan continues to develop its nuclear sector based on the principles of safety, responsibility, and the peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
