Warsaw, September 22, 2026 -  The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Poland held a roundtable discussion entitled «Kazakhstan’s Initiative: Establishment of an International Water Organization within the UN System». The event was attended by Polish experts from government institutions, the Chamber of commerce and industry, higher education institutions, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps.

During the meeting, participants were briefed on the international situation in the field of water resources, the key challenges currently facing the sector, and Kazakhstan’s vision for addressing them. Particular attention was paid to the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, aimed at establishing a more coherent and effective system of global water resources governance within the framework of the United Nations.

The Polish participants expressed considerable interest in the initiative and highlighted the importance of further discussing its practical aspects. Particular attention was given to the proposed structure of the International Water Organization, as well as issues related to its financing, mandate and functions. The need for international cooperation, adequate financing and investment in the water sector, as well as the consideration of successful experiences of individual countries, was also emphasized. The discussion highlighted the close interconnection between water-related issues and energy, digitalization, climate change and sustainable development.

Following the meeting, participants noted the scale and timeliness of the initiative to establish a more effective international platform for global water resources governance and expressed their readiness to continue discussions within the UN framework and other international platforms. The Kazakh side reaffirmed its openness to further dialogue and exchange of views with international partners with a view to refining the initiative and developing practical approaches to strengthening global cooperation in the field of water resources.
