World Soil Day was celebrated at Baitursynuly University
The event, which was held as part of the "Taza Kazakhstan" campaign, was attended not only by teachers and students, but also by foreign scientists – professors of Ondokuz Mayıs University (Turkey).
The idea to organize a large-scale ecological holiday in honor of World Soil Day belongs to the students of Kostanay Regional University, who decided to draw attention to the problems of conservation of soil resources.
– It is impossible to consider the soil as an inexhaustible storehouse, – said Tatyana Chekhov, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Acting Associate Professor of the KRU. – Anthropogenic activity has led to a huge number of problems: salinization, desertification, erosion, dehumification. 33% of all the planet's soils have been degraded. Our university pays great attention to this problem – conducts scientific research, studies the dynamics of soil indicators.
Ondokuz Mayıs University Professor Ridvan Kizilkaya, a recognized expert in the field of soil science and plant nutrition, made an international contribution to the study of the issue. His colleague Izzet Akca, who also took part in the event, works in a related scientific field – studies insect pests, their role in the ecosystem and ways to protect crops from their influence.
The students also showed themselves actively. Olga Melikhova and Valeria Spivak, 3rd-year students of the OP "Ecology", told about the history of World Soil Day, which has been celebrated for more than 10 years. Natalia Yablonskaya presented a report on the personality and scientific achievements of Vasily Dokuchaev, the founder of the school of scientific soil science and soil geography.
The event ended with an environmental quiz. The students answered a wide variety of questions: from the composition of the soil and its role in the ecosystem to modern methods of soil science and soil protection problems.
