The number of saigas permanently residing in the territory of Abai region is 1000-1500. Saigas mainly inhabit the central regions of the country.
However, in the autumn months, they reach the borders of Zhanasemei district in search of pastures. Employees of the Territorial Inspectorate of Forestry and Wildlife in Abai region recently went on a raid to monitor the condition of saigas.
"Saigas come to our region in the autumn-winter months, and in January-February they migrate to the neighboring Pavlodar and Karaganda regions. In addition to the steppe animals permanently residing in our region, about 4-5 thousand saigas winter there. During the raid, the areas of Sarzhal, Zhaima, Kosashat, Ainabulak, the Chagan River floodplain, as well as the areas at the foot of the Degelen, Karasha, Enbek, Telman mountains were studied. During the monitoring, groups of 150-250 animals were observed, and in some places more than 500 saigas were observed. "The condition of the animals is satisfactory, no violations of nature protection legislation have been identified," says Altair Shaidullin, head of the inspectorate's wildlife and game management department.
It should be noted that hunting and shooting saigas is prohibited in the country.
