The Ministry of Water Resources is rehabilitating the Koksarai counter-regulator in the Turkestan region to more efficiently divert flood waters, irrigate agricultural lands, and maintain the water balance of the North Aral Sea. As a result, the facility will be able to collect 3 billion cubic meters of water instead of 1.5 billion cubic meters. Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov paid a working visit to the region and met with the local population. He also inspected the condition of major water management facilities in the region.
“Today, design and estimate documentation has been developed for the reconstruction and strengthening of the Koksarai counter-regulator. This year, we plan to begin construction and installation work with the support of the Islamic Development Bank. The implementation of the project will allow the counter-regulator to collect twice as much water. In particular, it will collect 3 billion cubic meters of water instead of 1.5 billion cubic meters. "The modernization of the facility will also allow us to reduce the risk of emergencies and improve water supply to the North Aral Sea," said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
Nurzhan Nurzhigitov met with Chinese investors who intend to implement a cotton growing project in the Otyrar district using water-saving technologies. The minister discussed the plan for the development of the cotton industry with foreign entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, the minister visited Baidibek district and inspected the construction of the Baidibek-ata reservoir. To date, 48% of the construction and installation work of the facility has been completed. The reservoir can store 68 million cubic meters of water. The project is planned to be completed by the end of this year.
In the Maktaaral district, the minister got acquainted with the operation and condition of the Myrzashol centralized collector and drainage canal, which drains groundwater from agricultural fields. It is planned to strengthen the embankment at the facility located on the border with Uzbekistan, as well as reconstruct small canals through which water flows.
