The thematic event "Water Resources Management of Lake Balkhash: International cooperation, Research and Financing" was held at the national pavilion of Qazaqstan at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The event was organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Kazakhmys Corporation LLP.
Opening remarks were made by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan E. Nysanbayev, Chairman of the Water Management Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan A. Zhakanbayev, Regional Director of EY for Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Central Asia V. Kovalenko.
Kazakhmys Corporation is aware of its responsibility for environmental protection in the regions of its presence and undertakes obligations for their sustainable development. Following the principles of ESG, the company actively supports environmental initiatives and, in particular, pays special attention to the conservation of the ecosystem of Lake Balkhash. This was announced in his speech by Chairman of the Board of the Corporation Nurakhmet Nuriyev.
The main point of the session of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP will be the corporation's statement on the allocation of financial resources for the research work of Lake Balkhash aimed at preserving the Balkhash-Alakol basin.
In response to environmental challenges, Kazakhmys has launched a number of initiatives aimed at preserving and restoring the ecosystem of Lake Balkhash. These initiatives include the use of innovative methods of water resources management, reduction of industrial water consumption, expansion of water reuse, and the introduction of technologies for monitoring the state of the ecosystem.
The corporation is ready to move from dialogue to action, announcing the allocation of $ 5 million to finance projects aimed at preserving the lake.
The funds allocated by Kazakhmys will be used to study the lake's ecosystem, sustainable water management, monitoring of biodiversity and water quality, as well as to educate and inform the public.
It is planned that the implementation of these projects over the next 5-10 years will help improve the state of the ecosystem of Lake Balkhash, reduce anthropogenic impact, increase the environmental responsibility of the local population and businesses, as well as develop an effective model for sustainable management of natural resources of the Balkhash-Alakol basin.
