On December 15-16, heavy snow fell in Almaty, which significantly affected the situation in the city. As a result of this snowfall, which amounted to a third of the average monthly precipitation for December, 22 cm of snow appeared on the streets of Almaty, and in mountainous areas such as Kamensk Plateau and Shymkent, the snow cover was 40 cm and 42 cm, respectively. In the face of such adverse weather conditions, the city's utilities have actively joined in snow removal to restore the streets to a safe and passable condition.
More than 600 units of special equipment and 1,080 road workers are working around the clock to eliminate the consequences of the snowfall in Almaty. Since the beginning of the snowfall, 6,520 m3 of snow has already been removed from city streets.
As part of the Taza Kazakhstan program, journalists were shown morning snow removal on one of the busiest sections of the city, Abylaikhan Avenue. Special equipment was used for this purpose, including sweepers, combined road vehicles, Pony 4, KAMAZ trucks, as well as the labor of road workers. All these tools help to quickly clear the streets of snow and ice, ensuring traffic safety and comfort of citizens.
As noted by Zhanat Zhakupbek, Deputy head of the Municipal Infrastructure Development Department, snow removal requires preparatory work to form snow banks at the roadsides. The shafts are formed by large-sized machinery (graders, front loaders), their execution is carried out at night. The presence of snowfall in the morning hours on the roadway is a technological necessity in the production of work. The shafts are removed during the next work shift. Next, the instrument panel is cleaned after its removal, ice is chipped and snow-ice formations are removed.
Snow removal from the main highways of the city is scheduled to be completed on the night of December 17-18, but snow removal work will continue until the end of the winter season.
Winter cleaning in Almaty covers more than 2,300 streets with a total area of 25.1 million m2 and a length of 2,777 km. 10 contractors are involved in this work, and 70% of the total area is being cleared by the Almaty Tazalyk State Enterprise. The Almaty municipal services have 1,084 units of special equipment and 1,240 road workers in their arsenal, which allows them to quickly respond to changes in weather conditions and effectively eliminate the consequences of snowfall.
In conclusion, the utilities appealed to the citizens not to park vehicles on the roadsides, especially at night, in order to organize timely snow removal.
The first season of the environmental campaign for the collection of plastic caps, launched as part of the nationwide program "Taza Kazakhstan", has also ended in Almaty. The action was attended by school students and kindergarten students, who jointly collected more than 1.26 million caps. The initiative, aimed at drawing attention to environmental issues and forming an ecological culture among the younger generation, has received a wide response from young people and their parents. The action was attended by students from more than 200 schools and kindergartens in the city.
According to the results of the campaign, three districts of the city made the greatest contribution.:
Zhetysu district – 570 kg of caps (22.7% of the total volume);
Almaly district – 484 kg (19.3%);

On December 16, the results of the first season of the promotion were summed up, and on December 21, the winners and participants will be awarded at the East Mall. The program of the event: eco-fair, workshops and training sessions on waste recycling and environmental practices.
In parallel with the lid collection campaign, a unique Christmas tree made of recycled plastic was created with the support of KSC PLAST and the Eco-Hub. Its author was the famous sculptor Talgat Zhumagul. The Christmas tree symbolizes the hope of solving environmental problems and will become a decoration of the city on the eve of the New Year.
"My friends and I have been collecting lids for several weeks. It was not only good for the environment, but also very interesting. Now that I know that the covers that we have collected will help create beautiful Christmas trees in our city, I am proud to have become a part of this project," says Tomiris Namazbekova, a student at Gymnasium No. 147.
In addition, special children from the Voluntary Charity Foundation, the Meirim Foundation, the Autism Victory project, and the Insight School created festive New Year's toys from recycled materials under the guidance of eco-trainers from the Eco-Hub.
These products were purchased by large companies, including the IM Fund. Bulata Utemuratova, RAMS, Eurasian Bank, Almaly Holding, ZanHub. An important part of this campaign was the community centers in the city districts, which became collection points for the duration of the campaign.
"This project is a great example of how environmental education and creativity can be combined. It is important not only to teach children to take care of nature, but also to show how small actions can lead to big results," said Raisa Sakhieva, Deputy Director for Educational Work at Gymnasium No. 147.
The organizers emphasize that in 2025, the campaign to collect plastic caps will become a permanent part of the overall campaign to create an ecological culture in Almaty. Such initiatives not only beautify the city and remind of the importance of waste recycling, but also instill responsibility for the preservation of the environment.
