By October 1, Uzbekistan will send 16 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan. This is 1 billion cubic meters more than last year.
The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov and the Minister of Water Resources of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamraev reached an agreement on this at the 12th meeting of the joint working group on deepening bilateral water cooperation.
The parties noted that 15 billion cubic meters of water were sent to Kazakhstan during the last water management season (October 2023 - October 2024). Thus, this year this volume is expected to increase by 1 billion cubic meters.
Also, the Uzbek side will help ensure stable water supply through the Dostyk canal during this year's irrigation season.
In addition, the ministers agreed to carry out joint repair work on interstate canals. This will improve the quality of water supply to farmers in the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan and the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan.
"Another topic discussed at the meeting was the issue of automating water metering on the Syrdarya River. Earlier, we identified the first 10 points where the metering system will be installed. 5 points in each country. Today we agreed on the terms of reference for developing a feasibility study for the project. A meeting of a joint working group with representatives of international organizations will be held in February to discuss joint actions," said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
