The Chairman of the Emergency Situations Prevention Committee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Serik Zhunisbekov, arrived in Kostanay region on a working visit and began assessing the level of preparedness of the region for spring floods. The visit began in the city of Arkalyk. There, he got acquainted with preventive measures aimed at preventing floods.
In March 2024, 453 residential buildings were flooded in the city of Arkalyk. High soil moisture, an abnormal increase in snow volume, and a sharp increase in air temperature were named as possible causes of the flood. In order to prevent a repeat of last year's situation, a set of preventive measures was implemented in the city of Arkalyk and villages.
During the visit, Serik Zhunisbekov checked the level of preparedness of emergency response teams and the technical equipment necessary to combat floods. He also visited the villages of Severny, Rodina, and Novy, where he saw newly constructed storm sewer systems, more than 50 water pipes of various diameters, and ditch systems. These works are aimed at reducing the consequences of floods. In addition, he got acquainted with the condition of the snow removal site and assessed its ability to accept the required amount of snow to prevent flooding.
The Chairman of the Emergency Situations Prevention Committee visited the specialized fire department No. 4, met with its employees, and discussed preparations for spring floods.
Following the results of the visit, a joint working meeting was held with the heads of the Kostanay region akimat and the Emergency Situations Department. During the meeting, measures to prevent emergency situations and protect the population from floods were discussed. Recommendations were made to increase the height of the dam in order to remove snow in a timely manner and reduce the possible consequences of floods.
